You can customise your text boxes to add background and border colours. GoodNotes supports custom fonts and you can adjust your text’s colour, size, alignment and even line spacing. You can format your text to make it bold, italic, underlined, or strikeout. Text boxes let you add typed notes in GoodNotes. It seems nothing has improved for the shapes tool in GoodNotes. You also don’t have opacity options for the fill and your circular shapes still have the same colour for both your fill and border. We should be able to add or remove auto-fill for our shapes with just a few taps. Your shapes in the app can either be auto-filled or not, with no option to switch between the two. ![]() You can adjust your shapes once you’ve drawn them to change how they look and their border colour. We’re not even sure if they are still supported. The arrows in the app seem to have changed for the worst. You can draw regular and irregular shapes, as well as curves in GoodNotes. It’s a very basic zoom tool but it’s more than enough for most note-takers. So you might have to manually adjust it for that. A margin marks the start point for your zoom window to advance to on a new line. The app supports auto-advance, but it is still accurate when moving down the page to new lines. The zoom tool zooms sections of your page, though we feel zooming directly on the page is faster. Those are all the options you need for a decent eraser tool in a note-taking app. Auto-deselect automatically switches back to the tool you were using before the eraser. It has three fixed sizes and it can also erase the highlighter only. The eraser in GoodNotes can erase per stroke and per pixel. You can straighten it out to look neat, and we love that we can now have more colours for it on the toolbar. The highlighter goes behind your ink and it does not dim your notes when layered. We would only be worried if the feature was missing an app, so you won’t have any problem handwriting your notes in GoodNotes. ![]() In 2023, we feel good handwriting experience and palm rejection are now an industry standard that we should probably stop mentioning. The settings give you a bit of control over how your pen tool writes in the app. You also get tip sharpness customisation for your fountain pen. The GoodNotes developers should consider adding a favourites toolbar to the app at least, one that accommodates more than three tools.įountain and brush pens both have a pressure sensitivity option for customising your pen tool. We don’t use GoodNotes, and we find three pens to be too few even for reviews. Our pen thicknesses are still limited to three, though, which is not enough. Chances are, you won’t need that many colours to take notes, so those should be enough. The toolbar can now accommodate twelve colours. You can customise your pen tool to change its colour and thickness. I prefer the brush pen, it feels smoother than the fountain pen. GoodNotes has three types of pens: fountain, ball & brush. It’s a decent source of revenue and it does save us from having to hunt for digital stationery on Etsy. Generally, we support developers adding shops to their apps. It feels like they are following in Notability’s footsteps and we can’t help but wonder how much they’ll copy. We can now get more page templates from the GoodNotes shop. That way, I can see the contents of my notebooks right from the homepage, which makes it easier to find notes. Notebooks in GoodNotes can have covers, but I prefer not having any. ![]() At the moment, we have to import PDFs in the app so we can use our digital notebooks in the app. Page colours are still limited to three (white, yellow or dark) but that doesn’t matter because you can save custom templates to the application’s template library. We just hope in the future we’ll be able to save PDFs, like we can in Noteful, instead of just single pages. The app supports plenty of paper sizes, which can either be portrait or landscape. When creating a new notebook in GoodNotes you can customise it by choosing from a lot of page templates. We highly recommend trying them as well, before choosing an app. You can also try Noteful, Nebo and Notability as well, before purchasing a note-taking app. We love that users can now try the app before deciding to add it to their workflow. That’s probably enough to help you decide if you like the app enough to pay for it. GoodNotes app is free to try for new users, allowing you to create up to three free notebooks. This review focuses on the iPad version of the app. The app currently has some beta versions for Android and Windows versions, though we are not sure when exactly they will launch. It is available on the iPad, iPhone and Mac for an in-app, one-time purchase of $7.99, for all your devices (universal purchase). GoodNotes is a handwriting note-taking app by Time Base Technology Limited.
